An Elecraft K3 finally arrived in this house on tuesday! Unfortunately it doesn't belong to us but to a fellow amateur who wanted Ian to build it for him and was a month earlier in the ordering process. The radio arrived at 9am and was fully built and working 6 hours later. The whole radio was a joy to build ( I am told ) and has been on the air for the last 2 days just to make sure every thing is working as it should, before it is shipped back to Wales to its rightful owner first thing tomorrow. Apart from an upgrade to the latest firmware, an adjustment to the signal meter and a few tweaks here and there it is all ready to go. My impressions, having used it for only 10 minutes, is that it easily out classes and out performs most of the radios from the big commercial manufacturers. I know of at least 3 people who have traded in their £6000 radios for one or even two K3's and I can now see why! The receiver is fantastic, the audio superb with the Heil Goldline, the filtering workings like a dream and it has some features which are totally new to a HF tranceiver. Our thanks to John for allowing Ian to build this radio and to try it out. It goes to him tomorrow with the hope it will live up to his high expectations and the hope that Ian's own K3 will be just a few weeks away arriving here!
